Children’s Group

Growing in Faith: What’s a Sunday like in our Children’s Group?

A children’s program called Church School is offered from September through June during the 10:30 a.m. service for children in kindergarten through grade 6. Children start their Sunday in the sanctuary with their families and then at a designated time head to Church School. Each week we begin  with the day’s bible story, drama, art activity or game.

Children then participate in an application activity geared to their age in a smaller group. After the church service, parents are asked to  meet their children downstairs in the children’s ministry room and sign them out. The whole family can then join in our social time after service and enjoy coffee, juice and cookies.

As an affirming community, we welcome all families to participate in our Church School programs.

We are working to ensure that our teaching and resources (toys and books)  reflect the  multicultural  and diverse families we serve.

Little Ones – Newborn to age 3

Babies and children are always welcome to stay with their guardians in the service, but we do have a nursery room supervised by our wonderful caregiver, Lita.

The nursery program at ESG  helps young children experience God’s Word in a fun and meaningful way. Each month, we will focus on one story from the Bible. Simple songs and rhymes are used to convey the meaning of the story. Children are given the opportunity to play out the story using  items in a sensory bin. And simple crafts and games are also planned to reinforce the theme.

Curriculum

Church School incorporates the Scripture and the Spark: Activate Faith curriculum. The teachings and activities children will be involved in will open their eyes to what the Bible means and how it translates into their everyday lives.

Registration

Registration for this year will begin on September 8, 2019.

Our Children’s Ministry Team

We have a solid team of talented and committed adult volunteers who conduct the church school program, led by Children’s Ministry Administrator, Kate Littler.  We are committed to working with your children to build a Christian foundation that we hope will follow them throughout their lives.  In keeping with the Responsible Ministry Policy, all of our volunteers are screened and have completed Police Record checks. Our Volunteer Handbook outlines the steps we take to ensure that all those who work with vulnerable individuals, do so in a way that creates trust and safety for everyone.

ESG’s Children’s Library

Children’s Library

We have a Children’s Library which is an incredible resource for children and their families looking for both Christian materials and socially conscious books. Come for a visit and sign out some wonderful reading materials.   Our library also hosts a  Meet the Author event each year.  Interested in donating a book to the Library?  We appreciate new or gently used titles. Please contact Barb Long.

Kids & Kindness

Every few years, the children of ESG select a charity to support and learn about. We take it to the kids & they vote on the program that connects with them. At the start of 2017, the church school selected the charity Food with Friends, an after-school nutrition and fellowship for youth in rural areas south of Ottawa through the House of Lazarus.  The House of Lazarus is a Gifts with Vision project that supports the work of United Church partners across Canada and around the world. This program feeds 85 youth a week.

How do we raise funds? We host fun events like our annual Cookies-in-a-Jar FUNdraiser and a semi-annual bake sale at ESG’s Rummage Sale.
