Mental Health Series

Join Mary Thomson, MSW, RSW, RP*, for this third evening in our four part lecture series exploring mental health issues.

We will discuss what mental health issues are, how prevalent they are and what we can do when we encounter these issues in others or in ourselves.

Depression and Anxiety come in many forms and are the predominant mood/Mental Health issues that negatively impact our quality of life, physical health, work/school, and relationships. We will discuss what kinds of help are available as well as some of the perspectives and practices of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in promoting improved mental health and wellness.

Each session will include a perspective from spiritual traditions that parallels themes discussed in psychology – the search for meaning, coping with trauma and loss, suffering and the healing journey, dealing with guilt, shame and forgiveness, and the responsibility to live a good life.

October 24—Worrying About  Anxiety

What is the difference between worry and Anxiety Disorders; kinds of Anxiety Disorders (including Panic, OCD, PTSD), how much anxiety is too much; treatments for Anxiety Disorders.

November 7—Perfectionism: “Never Good Enough”

The difference between striving for excellence and perfectionism; The cost of unhelpful perfectionism on mental health and quality of life (Depression, OCD, Eating Disorders, Social Anxiety, low self-esteem); treating perfectionism with CBT.



*About the presenter: Mary Thomson MSW, RSW, RP is a Registered Social Worker & Registered Psychotherapist with over thirty years’ experience in Mental Health services in the Ontario hospital system. She works at the Outpatient Mental Health Service of Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) as well as being a guest lecturer on CBT psychotherapy for U of T Family Practice residents at MGH & the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty of Social Work. Mary has presented at various international clinical conferences; is a past clinical supervisor for psychiatric residents of the universities of Toronto & Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and U of T Faculty of Social Work students. She is a member of Eglinton St. George’s United Church.
