Church School

What's a Sunday like in Church School?

Every Sunday, children come to ESG’s Church School program to learn about God and what it means to have a genuine, loving relationship with God, with each other, and with the city and world we live in. Church School is offered from September through June during the 10:30 a.m. service. Children start their Sunday in the sanctuary with their families and then at a designated time head downstairs for Church School.  Babies and children are always welcome to stay with their guardians in the service, but we do have programs for every age - from infant to youth.

Little Ones - Newborn to age 3

We have a Nursery and toddler room supervised by our amazing caregiver, Lita. If you think your baby or toddler is ready to stay in the nursery while you are enjoying worship in the Sanctuary, feel welcome to come downstairs to meet Lita before the service.

Church School: Kindergarten - Grade 6

Kids participate all together for a carpet time with the day's bible story, drama, prayer or game. Children are then divided into age-specific small groups for an application activity. Small groups are a time for kids to cultivate relationships with each other and the leaders and learn what it means to live a life full of God's love. When the service is done, church school is also done! At that time, parents are asked to please meet their children upstairs in their activity classroom (unless they have been given permission to leave independently on their registration form) and sign them out. Please come and pick up your children before the coffee time, after the service.

Our wonderful team of leaders base their lessons on Scripture and the Spark: Activate Faith curriculum. The teachings and activities children will be involved in will open their eyes to what the bible means and how it translates into their everday lives.

Registration for the 2017-18 year will begin on September 10, 2017.

Our Children's Ministry Team

We have a solid team of talented and committed Children's Ministry leaders at ESG. Our team is led by Minster, Abigail Johnson.  We are committed to working with your children to strengthen their relationship with God while building a Christian foundation that we hope will follow them throughout their lives.  In keeping with the Responsible Ministry Policy, all of our volunteer leaders are screened and have completed Police Record checks. Our Volunteer Handbook outlines the steps we take to ensure that all those who work with vulnerable individuals, do so in a way that creates trust and safety for everyone.

*Please note: for the safety of our children, staff, and volunteers, all children must be registered by their parent or guardian before they are left unattended in a classroom. To pre-register your child for the 2017-18 year, please complete the 2017-18 Registration Form and bring it with you to the Sunday service.

ESG's Children's Library

We have an incredible Children's Library of over 1700 books with new titles arriving constantly.  We purchase new books based on recommendations, interests, curriculum, as well as by donation. Come for a visit and sign out some wonderful reading materials.  Once you have completed your Church School registration you will get your own Library card. The Children's Library is a wonderful resource to both children and their families looking for both christian materials and socially conscious books for children of all ages!  Our Library is loving cared for by Barb Long and Kate Littler.  Our library also hosts exciting events throughout the year such as Meet the Author events and bookmark contests.  Interested in donating a book to the Library?  We appreciate new or gently used titles. Please contact Barb Long.

Kids & Kindness

Every few years, the children of ESG select a charity to support and learn about. We take it to the kids & they vote on the program that connects with them. At the start of 2017, the church school selected the charity Food with Friends, an after-school nutrition and fellowship for youth in rural areas south of Ottawa through the House of Lazarus.  The House of Lazarus is a Gifts with Vision project that supports the work of United Church partners across Canada and around the world. This program feeds 85 youth a week.

How do we raise funds? We host fun events like our annual Cookies-in-a-Jar FUNdraiser and a semi-annual bake sale at ESG's Rummage Sale.

Duty of Care at ESG

Your child’s safety is incredibly important to us – please know that we screen all of our volunteers and have put many policies in place to ensure your child’s safety while they are in our care.  Our Volunteer Handbook outlines the steps we take to ensure that all those who work with vulnerable individuals, do so in a way that creates trust and safety for everyone.
